About Scott Richter

Scott Richter is a St. Louis-based mixed-media artist whose creative practice has developed through decades of engagement with technology, architecture, gallery development, and contemporary art. As president of Gallery 874 and a founding participant in the Mousa Art Initiative, Richter has worked closely with artists and exhibitions while helping transform unconventional buildings into spaces for creativity and cultural exchange.

After years spent constructing systems and creating opportunities for others, Richter has begun claiming his own voice as an artist. Working primarily with acrylic paint, collage paper, and adhesive on canvas, he builds layered abstract compositions in which geometric structure meets torn edges, translucent surfaces, and intuitive movement.

Richter's emergence as an artist is not a departure from his previous life, but an extension of it: a movement from constructing the environments in which art happens to creating a visual language entirely his own.

I have spent much of my life building systems, organizing information, solving problems, developing spaces, and helping create environments in which other people could make and exhibit art. My own work begins with that instinct for structure, but it becomes most meaningful when the structure starts to shift.

Using acrylic paint and collage paper on canvas, I construct compositions from translucent layers, torn edges, geometric fragments, and curved forms. Some elements behave like walls, supports, pathways, or signals; others resist definition.

These works reflect my movement from control toward trust. I do not see order and disorder as opposites. I see them as forces that continually shape one another.
